A DeFi lending market without intermediaries
Aave is one of the largest decentralized lending protocols: users deposit crypto into liquidity "pools" from which others borrow by posting collateral, and interest rates adjust automatically according to the supply and demand of each asset. Everything happens through smart contracts, with no bank in the middle.
aTokens that earn interest in real time
When you deposit an asset into Aave you receive an equivalent "aToken" (for example, aUSDC when you deposit USDC), a receipt that represents your deposit and whose balance grows continuously as interest accrues. That aToken can be moved or used in other apps, which turns the deposit into a productive asset rather than a simple locked balance.
Flash loans: uncollateralized loans within one block
Aave popularized "flash loans": uncollateralized loans that must be borrowed and repaid within a single transaction, in one block. If they are not repaid instantly, the whole operation reverts. It is a powerful primitive for arbitrage or refinancing, but also a technical tool that has been used in attacks on other DeFi protocols, a risk inherent to the ecosystem.
What can you do with Aave?
Earn interest by depositing crypto
Aave's most common use is depositing assets into its pools to lend liquidity and earn variable interest, embodied in aTokens that grow in real time. Rates depend on demand for each asset and are not guaranteed; the capital also remains exposed to smart-contract risk.
Borrow by posting crypto as collateral
You can borrow one asset by posting another as overcollateralized collateral, without selling what you deposited. It is useful to obtain liquidity without unwinding a position, but if the collateral value falls below a certain threshold, the position can be liquidated automatically, a central risk of this use.
Take part in the protocol governance
With the AAVE token you can vote on protocol decisions: which assets are listed, what risk parameters apply or how the treasury is used. It is a utility tied to coordinating and securing the ecosystem, beyond lending or borrowing.
