About Ethereum

Ethereum at a glance
A smart-contract platform
Ethereum is not just a coin: it is the platform where most decentralized applications run (DeFi, NFTs, stablecoins). ETH is the fuel ("gas") that pays for every operation of those programs, so its demand is tied to real network usage, not only speculation.
Proof of stake and staking
Since "The Merge" (2022), Ethereum is secured by proof of stake: those who lock ETH in staking validate the network and earn rewards, and energy use fell by over 99%. Part of the ETH spent on fees is burned, which can reduce circulating supply when the network is busy.
Fees and layer-2 networks
When the main network is congested, ETH gas can get expensive. That is why much activity has moved to layer-2 networks (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base), which settle on Ethereum but charge a fraction of the cost. Worth keeping in mind if you plan to move ETH often.
What can you do with Ethereum?
Access DeFi (decentralized finance)
Ethereum is the main DeFi platform: with ETH and a wallet you can use exchange, lending or liquidity-provision protocols without a bank in between. All of them run on smart contracts. These are complex, risky products (code bugs, liquidations, volatility), not guaranteed deposits.
Buy and mint NFTs
A large share of the NFT market (digital art, collectibles, in-game assets) was built on Ethereum with the ERC-721 standard. Buying, selling or minting an NFT on the network means paying the corresponding gas in ETH. NFT values are highly speculative and their liquidity can be low.
Pay gas on the network and its layer 2s
ETH is the fuel that powers Ethereum: any interaction with the network is paid in ETH. To cut costs, layer-2 networks (such as Arbitrum or Optimism) have emerged that process transactions off the main chain, and many also use ETH for fees, extending its utility beyond the base chain.
