A chain that upgrades itself
Tezos’s signature is on-chain governance: XTZ holders vote on protocol upgrades, which activate automatically if approved, without hard forks. It is a mechanism designed to avoid the community splits other networks have suffered.
Staking via "baking" and delegation
Tezos uses proof of stake with its own term: "baking". Those with enough XTZ can become a "baker" and validate blocks, and everyone else can delegate their balance to a baker to share in the rewards without giving up custody of their coins.
Formally verifiable contracts
Its smart contracts are written in Michelson, a language built for "formal verification": mathematically proving the code does what it should. It is an approach valued for sensitive applications such as asset tokenization, though its ecosystem is smaller than that of the leading networks.
