World ID: proof of humanity with the Orb
Worldcoin (rebranded as World Network in October 2024) is building an identity system to tell humans from bots. A device called the Orb scans the iris to verify you are a unique, real person, and in return you receive a World ID. Its pitch is to serve as a "proof of humanity" in a world increasingly filled with AI.
How it handles biometric data
According to World, by default the images the Orb captures are deleted after verification and, unless the user opts to store them, only an "iris code" remains: a mathematical representation of the iris not linked to the wallet or personal data. Even so, large-scale biometric collection is the project's most debated point.
Clashes with regulators worldwide
Iris collection has triggered investigations and bans in several countries: Spain ordered a halt to biometric data collection, a Kenyan court ordered the deletion of the data gathered, and Thailand stopped the service in 2025, demanding the deletion of data from 1.2 million people. That regulatory and privacy risk is a specific project factor to keep in mind.
