Dogecoin was created in 2013 as a parody based on the Shiba Inu dog meme, with no serious technological ambitions. Over time it became a singular case: a crypto whose value rests more on its community, internet culture and mentions by public figures than on a technical roadmap, which makes it especially sensitive to sentiment and speculation.

Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin has no supply cap: about 10,000 new DOGE are issued per block, adding roughly 5 billion DOGE per year. That fixed, ongoing inflation is a tokenomics trait of its own that sets it apart from cryptos with a limited supply.

Dogecoin uses the Scrypt algorithm and, since 2014, is "merge-mined" with Litecoin: miners can secure both networks at once without spending extra energy. That technical reliance on Litecoin's mining power is a quirk almost no other well-known crypto shares.
