Bitcoin prioritizes robustness and decentralization over speed: ~7 transactions per second and 10-minute blocks. Solana chases the opposite, thousands of transactions per second with fees of a fraction of a cent thanks to its "proof of history". They are two opposite design bets.
BTC works as a store of value. Solana is a smart-contract platform with its own ecosystem of DeFi, NFTs and payments; SOL pays fees and is used for staking. Its value depends on that on-chain activity growing, a different driver from Bitcoin's scarcity.
Bitcoin's network has run for over a decade with no major interruptions. Solana has suffered several historical outages due to congestion or software bugs, a specific risk of its high-throughput design with validators that need powerful hardware. Worth knowing before trading SOL.
