Bitcoin is a fixed-supply store-of-value with no programmability; Ethereum is a smart-contract L1 whose value tracks DeFi, staking yield and network fees — compare their theses, not just spot price.
This is the comparison that best sums up two philosophies. Bitcoin aims to be sound money and a store of value with a fixed supply of 21 million. Ethereum is a programmable platform: most DeFi, NFTs and stablecoins run on it, and ETH is the "fuel" that pays for that activity.
Bitcoin is secured by mining (proof of work), very robust but energy intensive. Ethereum switched to proof of stake in 2022 ("The Merge"), cutting energy use by over 99% and enabling staking. On top of that, part of the ETH spent on fees is burned, something Bitcoin does not do.
Bitcoin has an immovable cap of 21 million. Ethereum sets no maximum: it issues ETH to reward validators and burns ETH in fees, so its supply can grow or shrink depending on network usage. These are two monetary policies with very different incentives.
