Cardano is a layer-1 blockchain where every application lives on the same chain. Polkadot takes a different route: a central "Relay Chain" connecting many independent chains ("parachains") so they can communicate and share security. It is "one chain" versus "a network of chains".
Cardano is known for its peer-reviewed development and for writing contracts in Plutus/Haskell, prioritizing formal rigor. Polkadot was created by an Ethereum co-founder and its Substrate framework is built to launch custom chains that interoperate. Two different engineering philosophies.
Both use proof of stake, but the token's role differs. ADA is delegated to pools to secure the network. DOT, beyond staking and governance, was used to bid for parachain "slots" by locking tokens. They are different ways of putting the token to work in each network.
