Market outlook (editorial)

Bitcoin at a glance
A 21-million hard cap
Bitcoin has a fixed supply: there will never be more than 21 million BTC, and every ~4 years the "halving" cuts the miner reward in half. That programmed scarcity is why many treat it as digital gold rather than a coin for everyday spending.
Proof of work and security
The network is secured by proof of work (mining): thousands of machines compete to validate a block every ~10 minutes. It is the most computationally backed blockchain, which makes it very hard to attack, at the cost of high energy use and low throughput versus newer chains.
What it is actually used for
In Europe, BTC is used mainly as a long-term store of value and a diversification asset, not as an everyday means of payment. For small, frequent amounts the Lightning network enables near-instant payments, but adoption is still limited.
What can you do with Bitcoin?
A long-term store of value
BTC's most widespread use in Europe is as a store of value and a portfolio-diversification asset, backed by its capped 21-million supply. Many hold it long term ("HODL") rather than as everyday spending money. It is not a risk-free investment: its price can fall sharply.
Payments and remittances with Lightning
On top of Bitcoin runs the Lightning network, a layer 2 enabling near-instant payments with tiny fees, useful for small amounts or for sending money abroad without relying on banking intermediaries. Its adoption is still limited and requires compatible wallets.
Self-custody without intermediaries
With Bitcoin you can keep your funds in a self-custody wallet and control your private keys, without any bank being able to freeze or block the balance. That sovereignty has a trade-off: if you lose your keys or recovery phrase, no one can restore your access to the funds.
