Market outlook (editorial)

Ethereum Classic at a glance
The original chain after The DAO hack
Ethereum Classic is the continuation of the original Ethereum blockchain. In 2016, after The DAO hack drained millions in ether, the community split: the majority applied a hard fork to reverse the theft, giving rise to today's Ethereum, while another group chose not to alter the ledger and kept the original chain, which became Ethereum Classic.
The "code is law" principle
Ethereum Classic was born defending the motto "code is law": the idea that recorded transactions should not be reversed even when the outcome is bad, because immutability is a blockchain's core value. That philosophy of an unalterable ledger is its ideological differentiator from Ethereum, which did modify the chain to undo the hack.
Proof of work and 51% attacks
Unlike Ethereum, which moved to proof of stake in 2022, Ethereum Classic keeps proof of work (PoW) with mining. Being a network with less mining power than the large PoW chains, it has suffered several 51% attacks in its history (notably in 2019 and 2020), a specific security risk inherent to networks with lower hashrate.
What can you do with Ethereum Classic?
Run smart contracts on PoW
Ethereum Classic keeps the Ethereum-compatible virtual machine, so it lets you deploy smart contracts and decentralized apps, but on a chain that still runs on proof of work. It is an option for those who prefer that mining model over Ethereum's proof of stake.
Mine with proof-of-work hardware
After Ethereum's move to proof of stake in 2022, Ethereum Classic became a relevant destination for miners with GPU hardware or specialized rigs looking to keep mining on a compatible chain. Mining carries energy and hardware costs, and rewards depend on the network and are not guaranteed.
Bet on an immutable ledger
For those who value the "code is law" principle, ETC works as the crypto that never reversed its ledger: transferring and storing value on a chain whose hallmark is not altering past transactions. It is a use tied to a philosophical stance on immutability, rather than a concrete technical advantage.
