A decentralized storage marketplace
Filecoin is a network where anyone can rent out spare disk space and earn FIL, or pay in FIL to store files in a distributed way instead of on a central server. Its purpose is specific: an open marketplace for data storage, built on top of the IPFS protocol.
Cryptographic proofs that data is stored
To guarantee providers actually keep the files, Filecoin uses two custom proofs: "proof-of-replication" (a unique copy was stored) and "proof-of-spacetime" (it stays stored over time). Providers post FIL as collateral and can lose it if they fail.
FVM: smart contracts over storage
With the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM), the network added Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, opening the door to services like programmable storage or "compute over data". Its usefulness depends on real demand for decentralized storage, which competes with well-entrenched centralized providers.
What can you do with Filecoin?
Store files in decentralized storage
Filecoin’s core use is hiring storage without relying on a single cloud provider: you pay providers around the network in FIL to keep your data, with cryptographic proofs verifying they actually maintain it. It is an alternative to traditional centralized storage services.
Offer storage capacity as a provider
If you have disk space, you can become a storage provider: you contribute capacity, accept client deals and lock up FIL as collateral. The network rewards you for sealing data and continuously proving you keep it, but you can lose the collateral if you fail to comply.
Preserve data with content addressing
Filecoin fits with IPFS to preserve files identified by their content rather than their location, useful for datasets, web content or files you want kept available long-term without relying on a specific server. It is a different use case from cryptos built for payments.
