Bittensor is an open source protocol that uses blockchain technology to create a decentralised machine learning network. This network allows machine learning models to be collaboratively trained and rewarded in TAO based on the informational value they provide to the collective. In addition, Bittensor's TAO grants external access to users, allowing them to extract information from the network as they adjust their activities to meet their needs. Nodes that add value to the network are rewarded with more participation (TAO), while low-value nodes are weakened and eventually deregistered.

A decentralized network for artificial intelligence
Bittensor is a network that aims to coordinate the production of artificial intelligence in a decentralized way. It is organized into "subnets": specialized networks where participants compete on specific AI tasks (text, images, data, etc.). Within each subnet, "miners" run models and do the work and "validators" evaluate and secure operations, sharing the rewards in TAO.
Bitcoin-style tokenomics: 21 million and halving
TAO has a supply cap of 21 million tokens, just like Bitcoin. Its halving does not depend on block count but on supply: once 10.5 million TAO (half the total) are distributed, daily issuance halves, from around 7,200 to 3,600 TAO per day. That first halving was expected around December 2025.
Dynamic TAO (dTAO) and each subnet's Alpha token
In February 2025 the network adopted Dynamic TAO (dTAO): each subnet got its own "Alpha" token and liquidity pool (AMM). With this, it is the market, not validators, that decides which subnets receive more daily TAO emissions. It is a technical, experimental ecosystem whose value depends on subnets actually delivering useful AI, a specific risk to consider.
