Proof of stake and staking
Since "The Merge" (2022), Ethereum is secured by proof of stake: those who lock ETH in staking validate the network and earn rewards, and energy use fell by over 99%. Part of the ETH spent on fees is burned, which can reduce circulating supply when the network is busy.
Fees and layer-2 networks

No. Ethereum does not set a maximum coin count like Bitcoin's 21 million. However, since the EIP-1559 upgrade part of the fees is "burned" (destroyed), which can reduce net supply when the network is heavily used. That is why its issuance is sometimes described as potentially deflationary, though it is not guaranteed.
Ethereum produces a block every ~12 seconds, and a transaction with a sufficient fee usually confirms within that timeframe. Full finality (when the transaction is considered irreversible under proof of stake) arrives roughly a couple of epochs later. If you pay too little gas during congestion, your transaction can be left waiting.
ETH is the native currency of Ethereum and the one used to pay gas for any operation. ERC-20 tokens (for example, many stablecoins or DeFi project tokens) are assets that "live" on top of Ethereum following a shared standard, but to move them you always need some ETH in the wallet to cover the network fee.
