Pure proof of stake
Algorand, created by cryptographer Silvio Micali (a Turing Award winner), uses "pure proof of stake": for each block, participants who propose and validate are chosen at random, secretly and weighted by ALGO. The aim is to avoid forks and offer instant finality without requiring large staking deposits.
Verifiable random selection (VRF)
The technical key is a verifiable random function (VRF): each node privately learns whether it is selected and can prove it, without anyone being able to predict or attack it in advance. This cryptographic lottery is what lets Algorand scale without sacrificing (by design) decentralization.
Minimal fees and native assets
Fees on Algorand are very low and stable, and the network supports assets and smart contracts natively, with a focus on tokenization and payments. Its challenge is not technical but adoption: competing for attention and liquidity against far larger ecosystems.
What can you do with Algorand?
Move value with near-instant settlement
Thanks to sub-3-second finality and fees of a fraction of a cent, Algorand is used for payments and transfers where it matters that the operation settles instantly and with no reversal risk, such as micropayments or settlement between platforms.
Issue assets and tokens on the network
Algorand includes a native asset standard (ASA), which lets you issue tokens, stablecoins or representations of real-world assets directly on the base layer, without deploying complex contracts. It has been used, for instance, in institution-backed tokenization projects.
