Market outlook (editorial)

Cosmos at a glance
The "internet of blockchains" and IBC
Cosmos is not a single chain but an ecosystem of independent blockchains that talk to each other via the IBC protocol (Inter-Blockchain Communication), a standard that lets tokens and data move across more than a hundred chains. Many well-known projects were built with its development kit, the Cosmos SDK.
Shared security (Interchain Security)
The Cosmos Hub and its ATOM token offer "Interchain Security": other chains can lease the Hub’s validator set instead of bootstrapping their own security from scratch. Validators securing those chains earn rewards in each chain’s tokens, tying ATOM’s value to that coordination role.
ATOM inflation and value capture
ATOM is secured by proof of stake and has had a variable inflation designed to incentivize staking, which dilutes anyone who does not delegate their tokens. Its historical challenge is "value capture": making ATOM benefit from the whole ecosystem’s growth and not just the Hub, which is why its tokenomics is under review.
What can you do with Cosmos?
Stake to secure the Cosmos Hub
The core use of ATOM is staking: you delegate your tokens to a validator to take part in CometBFT (formerly Tendermint) consensus and earn rewards. In exchange you accept the roughly 21-day lock-up when withdrawing funds.
Move assets across chains with IBC
Thanks to IBC you can transfer tokens natively between the 150-plus connected chains of the Cosmos ecosystem, without relying on a centralized bridge. It is the interoperability function that sets Cosmos apart from isolated blockchains.
Take part in on-chain governance
With ATOM you can vote on proposals that decide the direction of the Cosmos Hub, from network parameters to the use of its community treasury. It is active on-chain governance in which decisions are executed according to the vote of token holders.
