Market outlook (editorial)

Near Protocol at a glance
Sharding with Nightshade
NEAR scales by splitting the network into "shards" that process transactions in parallel, a design called Nightshade. This raises capacity without every validator having to process all activity, with sub-second block times and very low fees.
Readable accounts and chain abstraction
NEAR uses human-readable account names (like "name.near") instead of long hex addresses, aiming for an experience closer to a normal app. Its current bet is "chain abstraction": letting users manage assets across several blockchains from a single account, hiding the complexity from the user.
NEAR: staking, burning and competition
The NEAR token pays fees, is used for staking and grants a governance vote; part of each fee is burned and another part pays the developers of the contracts used. As a layer-1 platform it competes with many other fast chains, so its value depends on attracting real apps and users.
What can you do with Near Protocol?
Pay gas for NEAR applications
The NEAR token is the network's fuel: it is used to pay the fees of each transaction and of smart-contract execution. Part of those fees is burned and, in NEAR's model, a portion can go toward rewarding the contract being executed, an incentive designed for those who build useful applications.
Help secure the network through staking
As a Proof-of-Stake network, you can delegate your NEAR to a validator to contribute to the chain's security and become eligible for rewards. It is a way to take part in running the network without operating the infrastructure yourself, bearing in mind that rewards are neither fixed nor guaranteed.
Interact with low-cost dApps
Thanks to its fraction-of-a-cent fees and its couple-of-seconds finality, NEAR lends itself to decentralized applications where the user performs many small operations without gas making them unviable. Its focus on readable accounts and a simple experience aims to bring these dApps closer to non-technical users.
