They are specialized networks within Bittensor, each focused on a specific AI task (generating text, images, scraping data, etc.). In each subnet, miners compete by running models and validators assess their quality. The subnet owner registers it and receives a share of the emissions it generates.

Does TAO have a supply cap?

Yes. TAO has a fixed cap of 21 million tokens, the same figure as Bitcoin. Issuance is reduced through halvings, but unlike Bitcoin they are not triggered by block count but by reaching certain distributed-supply milestones: the first, once 10.5 million TAO (half the total) are handed out.

How are new TAO created?

New TAO are issued exclusively for participating in the network: they are shared among the miners running AI models, the validators verifying the work and the subnet owners. There is no pre-mine claimed without contributing work; issuance rewards real contribution to the subnets' tasks.

Dynamic TAO (dTAO), live since February 2025, gave each subnet its own "Alpha" token and a liquidity pool, so the market decides which subnets get more emissions instead of leaving it to validators.
