What are Bittensor subnets?

They are specialized networks within Bittensor, each focused on a specific AI task (generating text, images, scraping data, etc.). In each subnet, miners compete by running models and validators assess their quality. The subnet owner registers it and receives a share of the emissions it generates.

Does TAO have a supply cap?

Yes. TAO has a fixed cap of 21 million tokens, the same figure as Bitcoin. Issuance is reduced through halvings, but unlike Bitcoin they are not triggered by block count but by reaching certain distributed-supply milestones: the first, once 10.5 million TAO (half the total) are handed out.

How are new TAO created?

New TAO are issued exclusively for participating in the network: they are shared among the miners running AI models, the validators verifying the work and the subnet owners. There is no pre-mine claimed without contributing work; issuance rewards real contribution to the subnets' tasks.

What is dTAO and what changed in the network?

Dynamic TAO (dTAO), live since February 2025, gave each subnet its own "Alpha" token and a liquidity pool, so the market decides which subnets get more emissions instead of leaving it to validators. It is an experimental model whose value depends on subnets delivering useful AI. TAO's price is volatile and this is not advice.

Bittensor is an open source protocol that uses blockchain technology to create a decentralised machine learning network. This network allows machine learning models to be collaboratively trained and rewarded in TAO based on the informational value they provide to the collective. In addition, Bittensor's TAO grants external access to users, allowing them to extract information from the network as they adjust their activities to meet their needs. Bittensor's ultimate vision is to create a marketplace for artificial intelligence, allowing producers and consumers of this good to interact in a trustless, open and transparent context.
