Optimism at a glance
The home chain of the OP Stack
Optimism is an optimistic layer-2 rollup on Ethereum, but its signature is the OP Stack: an open-source framework that other chains (like Coinbase’s Base, Zora or Mode) reuse to launch their own networks. The set of interoperable OP Stack chains is known as the "Superchain".
Fault proofs with Cannon
To verify transaction correctness, Optimism uses Cannon, a fault-proof virtual machine that compiles the client to MIPS instructions and disputes execution step by step on Ethereum. It is a single-round approach, different from Arbitrum’s multi-round dispute game.
Bicameral governance and public goods
The OP token governs the Optimism Collective through two houses: the Token House (with OP) and the Citizens’ House, focused on retroactively funding "public goods". It is a distinctive governance experiment; OP’s value depends on Superchain chains continuing to adopt that model.
What can you do with Optimism?
Operate on the Superchain at reduced cost
Being EVM-compatible, on OP Mainnet you can use Ethereum DeFi apps, markets and protocols while paying much lower fees. On top of that, the Superchain connects several chains built with OP Stack, making it easier to move across an ecosystem of networks that share common standards.
Bridge ETH and tokens from Ethereum
You can move ETH and tokens from Ethereum to OP Mainnet through its bridge to operate more cheaply. As an optimistic rollup, withdrawals back to Ethereum involve a waiting period during which the network allows transactions to be challenged before releasing the funds.
Vote in the Optimism Collective with OP
With OP you can take part in governing the Optimism Collective, which combines a token house with a "Citizens’ House" in charge of allocating retroactive public goods funding. It is an ecosystem-coordination utility, not a means to pay fees.
