Market outlook (editorial)

Arbitrum at a glance
An optimistic rollup on Ethereum
Arbitrum is a layer-2 network that batches many transactions off Ethereum and settles them on the main chain, with far lower fees. It uses "optimistic rollups": it assumes transactions are valid unless someone challenges them within a dispute window, a different model from zero-knowledge rollups.
Interactive fraud proofs (Nitro/BOLD)
Its Nitro tech resolves disputes with multi-round interactive fraud proofs: when two parties disagree, they "bisect" the execution until they isolate the single disputed step, which is verified on Ethereum. That design aims to minimize the cost of settling an error versus revalidating an entire block.
ARB is a governance token, not gas
Fees on Arbitrum are paid in ETH, not ARB. The ARB token is for governance (voting on Arbitrum DAO proposals about the treasury and technical parameters). Worth noting: a large share of supply comes from allocations that unlock gradually, a source of selling pressure to watch.
What can you do with Arbitrum?
Use Ethereum DeFi with lower fees
Arbitrum runs the same applications as Ethereum (it is EVM-compatible), so you can use lending protocols, decentralized exchanges or on-chain markets while paying far lower fees than on mainnet, yet inheriting its security by posting data to Ethereum.
Move assets between Ethereum and the layer 2
You can deposit ETH or tokens from Ethereum into Arbitrum through its official bridge to operate at reduced cost and later withdraw them to layer 1. Keep in mind that, as an optimistic rollup, withdrawals back to Ethereum include a waiting period before the funds are available.
Take part in governance with ARB
If you hold ARB you can use it to vote in the Arbitrum DAO, which decides on technical upgrades and how the protocol treasury is used. It is a utility tied to coordinating the ecosystem, different from paying fees, which on Arbitrum are settled in ETH.
