Market outlook (editorial)

Litecoin at a glance

The "silver" to digital gold

Litecoin launched in 2011 as a fork of Bitcoin's code, conceived by Charlie Lee as a nimbler complement: if Bitcoin is "digital gold," Litecoin was framed as "silver," meant for more frequent, smaller transactions. It shares much of Bitcoin's philosophy, with tweaks aimed at speed.

Faster blocks and the Scrypt algorithm

Litecoin produces a block every ~2.5 minutes, four times faster than Bitcoin's ~10 minutes, which speeds up confirmations. It also uses the Scrypt mining algorithm instead of Bitcoin's SHA-256, a technical choice originally intended to rely less on specialized hardware.

A supply capped at 84 million

Its tokenomics mirror Bitcoin's at a larger scale: the maximum supply is 84 million LTC (exactly four times Bitcoin's 21 million) and it also applies "halvings" that periodically cut the miner reward in half. It is a veteran crypto, with many years of continuous operation behind it.

What can you do with Litecoin?

Sending fast, low-value payments

With blocks every ~2.5 minutes and historically low fees, Litecoin was designed for more frequent, smaller transactions than Bitcoin. That nimble-payments profile is its original use case as the "silver" to digital gold.

Making confidential transactions with MWEB

Since 2022, Litecoin lets you move LTC into its MWEB layer to send transactions where only the parties involved know the amount. It is a privacy option built into a veteran crypto, useful for anyone wanting confidentiality without leaving the network.

Holding it as a scarce long-term digital asset

With an 84-million LTC cap and periodic halvings, Litecoin shares Bitcoin's programmed-scarcity logic and has over a decade of continuous operation behind it. Even so, it is a volatile asset with no guarantee of holding or increasing its value.
