That speed has a cost: running a Solana validator requires powerful hardware, which reduces the number of nodes versus more decentralized networks. The chain has suffered several historical outages, a specific risk worth knowing before trading SOL.
Its own ecosystem
Solana has built its own ecosystem of stablecoins, NFTs and payment apps, with projects that do not exist on other chains. Its SOL token is used to pay fees and for staking, and its value depends largely on that on-chain activity continuing to grow.

Micropayments and high-frequency apps
