The XRP Ledger settles transactions in about 3-5 seconds with fees of a fraction of a cent, and Ripple uses it as a bridge in its liquidity product (ODL): instead of pre-funding destination accounts, the source currency is converted into XRP and XRP into the destination currency in seconds. That "bridge asset" approach is its differentiator versus smart-contract-first chains.
Account reserve and destination tag
The XRP Ledger has its own technical quirks: activating an account requires keeping a base reserve locked in XRP, and many exchanges require a "destination tag" to know which customer a deposit belongs to. Sending XRP to an exchange without that tag is a common mistake that can make recovering the funds difficult.
