Ethereum hosts the largest smart-contract economy and settles most stablecoin volume, while Cardano favours peer-reviewed, methodical rollouts with a thinner DeFi footprint — read active addresses and TVL, not headline price.
Ethereum is the smart-contract platform with the most applications, liquidity and developers. Cardano, co-founded by an Ethereum co-founder, bets on peer-reviewed, more gradual development. The difference is maturity and ecosystem size versus formal method and phased rollout.
Under the hood they are technically different: Ethereum uses an account model and runs contracts on the EVM (Solidity). Cardano uses an extended UTXO model (eUTXO) and writes contracts in Plutus/Haskell. That difference affects how apps are built and their security guarantees.
Monetary policy differs. Ethereum sets no maximum and burns part of the ETH in fees, so its supply can rise or fall with usage. Cardano has a fixed cap of 45 billion ADA and a decreasing, predictable issuance. Two opposite ways to manage supply.
