2026 analysis

Why look for a BBVA alternative?

You buy bitcoin in the BBVA app where you already receive your salary: three taps, biometrics, all convenient. Until you want to send it to your Ledger and the app shows a 4% fee on the value — €40 on €1,000 just to leave. That exit fee pushes the active investor to look for an alternative.

BBVA, one of the largest listed banks in the eurozone, provides bitcoin and ether buy/sell and custody to retail customers in Spain after notifying the service with the CNMV. The bank is the custodian itself — with no external technology partner — and operates exclusively from its app, with mandatory biometrics and no advice on the assets, per bbva.es and its official announcement. In Spain the catalogue remains limited to two coins, with a 1.49% fee per trade, free custody and that 4% if you withdraw to an external wallet.

What leads people to look for an alternative

Why so many people doubt BBVA

A catalogue of just two cryptocurrencies

BBVA operates in Spain with only bitcoin and ether since its July 2025 launch — with no public signs of expansion as of mid-2026.

1.49% to enter, 4% to exit

The 1.49% trading fee stacks with an extra 4% if you decide to transfer your crypto assets to a wallet outside BBVA.

Banking custody, no cheap withdrawal

BBVA custodies with its own infrastructure — a fair point in its favour —, but taking those assets to your own wallet has a real cost a native exchange does not charge.

Public record

Reputation and documented facts about BBVA

Sanctions, incidents or controversies recorded in official sources or verifiable media. Bit2Me does not pass judgment: we cite public facts.

  1. BBVA completed the notification procedure with the CNMV under Article 60 of the MiCA Regulation and activated its bitcoin and ether trading and custody service for all retail customers in Spain on 4 July 2025, after a phased rollout that began with regulatory approval in March 2025.

    Source: bbva.com

  2. As of mid-2026, BBVA’s Head of Digital Assets publicly confirmed the service in Spain remained limited to retail customers and to bitcoin and ether, while institutional and corporate offerings were still in development.

These records do not rule out the competitor being suitable in other contexts; they are part of the due diligence worth doing before depositing funds.

Verdict

BBVA and Bit2Me share MiCA, but through different routes: BBVA provides crypto as a credit institution via an Article 60 MiCA notification to the CNMV; Bit2Me is a CASP directly authorised by the CNMV since 2014. If you are already a BBVA customer and only want to try bitcoin or ether without opening another app → BBVA (in-house custody, no external partner). If you want over 400 coins, Pro from 0.10% taker and on-chain withdrawal without the 4% exit fee → Bit2Me.

Why Bit2Me

Why Bit2Me lets you sleep at night

If BBVA treats crypto as one more feature, compare it with what you need to sleep calmly: custody, withdrawals, tax tools, and specialised support.

Crypto that doesn't stain you

Bit2Me complies with KYC/AML and is registered with the Bank of Spain: your operations don't mix with illicit-origin funds on a supervised platform.

Headquartered in Spain, not a tax haven

Bitcoinforme S.L. operates under European law with the CNMV as its direct supervisor.

Free, automatic tax report

Download it from the app or web for every tax year you've traded, at no extra cost. It generates itself from your activity.

No security incidents since 2014

Five consecutive independent audits back our operational soundness.

Human support in your language

24/7 support in your language, with a phone line (+34 910 91 37 88) and people — not bots — answering from Spain.

A platform that doesn't go down

Multi-region high availability, 24/7, 365 days a year, with ~100 ms average response.

Your funds, when you decide

Withdraw to your own wallet at any time. No lock-in, no penalty.

$150M insurance on custody

Assets in Bit2Me Custody are insured for $150M (USD), with segregated cold storage and multisig + HSM FIPS 140-2.

BBVA’s Article 60 MiCA notification versus Bit2Me’s direct CASP authorisation

BBVA is a credit institution, and MiCA lets it provide crypto-asset services without applying for full Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) authorisation: it only needs to notify the CNMV under Article 60, submitting its programme of activities and internal controls, per the CNMV portal. After completing that notification, BBVA activated the service for all retail customers in Spain, per bbva.com.

Bit2Me follows the other MiCA route: direct CASP authorisation by the CNMV, with crypto as the core regulated activity since 2014, not a product line of a universal bank. On paper, both routes are provided for by the same European regulation — there is no “regulatory gap” at BBVA —; the real difference is specialisation: a supervisor evaluates BBVA’s entire banking business, while Bit2Me’s authorisation is dedicated entirely to crypto activity.

BBVA’s own custody with no external partners vs Bit2Me’s published crypto policy

Unlike other banks that distribute crypto through a technology partner, BBVA provides and custodies the service entirely with its own infrastructure, with no third parties, and requires biometrics enabled on the phone to trade, per El Mundo and the bank itself. It is a real point in its favour: the bank does not delegate custody to an external partner.

Bit2Me publishes specific detail on its crypto security: funds mostly in cold storage, operating without security incidents since 2014, audited ISO certifications and a $150 million policy on assets held in Bit2Me Custody. BBVA does not publish an equivalent crypto-insurance figure in its product page — it has the solidity of an IBEX 35 bank, but without that specific detail on crypto-asset custody.

1.49% to buy and 4% to leave: the real cost of trading crypto at BBVA

BBVA’s official schedule is clear: 1.49% per buy or sell (with a fee-free first purchase promotion), free custody and a 4% fee on the euro-equivalent value if you decide to transfer your bitcoin or ether to an external wallet. On a €1,000 purchase you pay €14.90; if you later want to move that same €1,000 to your own wallet, BBVA charges another €40.

Bit2Me Pro competes with up to 0% maker / 0.10% taker on liquid pairs, no custody fee and no platform cost when withdrawing to your own wallet (only the blockchain network fee, as with any exchange). In the same example of €1,000 bought and withdrawn, Bit2Me charges €1 on the purchase and no extra 4% to take it out.

BBVA’s branch network vs specialised Spanish crypto support

BBVA solidly handles day-to-day banking: branches, phone banking and an app with millions of customers. For the crypto-asset service, the bank itself states it offers no advice on these assets and that access is client-initiated only — consistent with its universal-bank profile, but without a dedicated crypto channel beyond the buy/sell flow in the app.

Bit2Me answers with Without chat-only: multilingual support and a European team that lives crypto operations daily: choosing the right network on withdrawal, CNMV verification, SEPA and tax matters. It does not compete on branch count; it competes on solving, by talking, a crypto investor’s specific question — exactly what a universal bank is not designed to do on this product.

Your lifelong bank or a specialised exchange?

BBVA solves the “open another app” friction: you buy BTC or ETH from the account where you already receive your salary, with the solidity of an IBEX 35 bank and in-house custody with no third parties. The trade-off is a catalogue of just two coins, 1.49% per trade and a 4% fee if you decide those assets should live in your own wallet instead of the bank.

Bit2Me assumes crypto is your territory, not a current-account extra: over 400 assets, Pro with fees from 0.10%, Earn, Card, Loan, Tax and on-chain withdrawal with no platform cost. Many users keep BBVA for daily banking and use Bit2Me when they want to go beyond bitcoin and ether — they are not mutually exclusive.

The real cost of getting in and out: BBVA vs Bit2Me on €1,000

Buying €1,000 in bitcoin at BBVA costs €14.90 (1.49%). If you later decide to move it to your own wallet, BBVA applies an extra 4% on the value: another €40, a total of €54.90 just to enter and exit the position — custody itself is free, but the exit is not.

The same cycle on Bit2Me Pro, on liquid pairs, costs €1 to enter (0.10% taker) and €0 in platform fees to withdraw to your wallet — only the blockchain network fee, standard on any exchange. The gap between €54.90 and just over €1 shows why where your crypto ends up matters as much as the purchase price.

The decision

Which one to choose? It depends on your profile

Bit2Me — pros

  • Over 400 cryptocurrencies versus the two (bitcoin and ether) BBVA offers in Spain.
  • Up to 0% maker / 0.10% taker on Pro, with none of the 4% exit fee BBVA applies on withdrawal to your own wallet.
  • CASP directly authorised by the CNMV since 2014 — crypto as a central regulated business, not an accessory banking notification.
  • Pro, Earn, Card, Loan and Tax suite built for the crypto investor, not just two-coin buy/sell.
  • Human multilingual crypto support, complementary to your day-to-day BBVA account.

BBVA — things to consider

  • IBEX 35 bank with in-house custody and no external partners; convenience of trading without leaving the app you already use for your salary.
  • Fee-free first purchase and free custody; the BBVA Group already operates crypto in Switzerland (private banking) and Turkey (Garanti BBVA, broader catalogue).
  • Catalogue limited to bitcoin and ether in Spain, with no publicly documented expansion on its product page.
  • 1.49% per trade plus an extra 4% to withdraw to an external wallet; no Pro, Earn, Card or crypto Tax.

When to choose BBVA?

  • You are already a BBVA customer and only want occasional exposure to bitcoin or ether without opening another app or going through KYC on another platform.
  • You prioritise having your crypto assets custodied by the bank itself, with no external partners, even if that means a minimal catalogue.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for a BBVA alternative because you care about European regulation, predictable fees, the safety of your funds and support in your language, Bit2Me addresses exactly those needs.

What people who already switched say

Your questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

BBVA provides the service as a credit institution via an Article 60 MiCA notification to the CNMV, and custodies the assets with its own infrastructure, with no external partners, per its official announcement. If you also want over 400 cryptocurrencies, on-chain withdrawal without that 4% exit fee and a published $150 million crypto custody policy, Bit2Me complements that banking proposition as a specialist exchange authorised as a CASP by the CNMV.

Conclusion

BBVA turns buying bitcoin and ether into a three-tap errand inside the app you already use for your salary — convenient, custodied in-house by the bank itself and without leaving the BBVA Group ecosystem. The ceiling arrives quickly: only two cryptocurrencies, 1.49% per trade and a 4% fee if you want to move your funds to your own wallet. If you operate operating in euros in Europe and want a full catalogue, Pro fees from 0.10% and on-chain withdrawal without that 4%, Bit2Me is the BBVA alternative for those who see crypto as the goal, not a banking add-on. Opening an account is free and you do not need to close your BBVA account.
