What backs USDe if not dollars in a bank?

USDe is backed by a financial strategy, not by cash in a bank: Ethena holds spot crypto (such as staked ETH or BTC) and, at the same time, equivalent short positions in perpetual futures. That "delta-neutral" combination hedges the collateral's price swings and is what lets it try to hold a $1 value.

Where does the sUSDe yield come from?

From two sources: the "funding" that long traders pay to shorts in perpetual futures when the market is bullish, plus the staking yield of the ETH held at spot. That yield is neither fixed nor guaranteed: it varies with market conditions and can shrink substantially.

What happens if funding turns negative?

It is the model's main risk. In prolonged bear markets, perpetual funding can flip so that shorts are the ones paying, which would push sUSDe yield to zero or even negative. Ethena keeps a reserve fund to absorb short periods of negative funding, but it is a structural risk to understand before using it.

How is ENA different from USDe?
