What is "gas" and why do Ethereum fees change?

On Ethereum every operation consumes "gas," priced in gwei (billionths of an ETH). The more people compete to get transactions included, the higher gas rises, so fees fluctuate with network demand: a simple transfer is cheap, but interacting with complex DeFi contracts can be expensive when the network is congested.

Can you stake Ethereum?

Yes. Since Ethereum switched to proof of stake (The Merge, 2022), you can stake ETH to help validate the network and earn rewards. Running your own validator requires 32 ETH, but there is also pooled staking or staking via services, which lets you take part with less. Rewards vary and ETH may be subject to lock-up periods or a withdrawal queue.

Does Ethereum have a supply cap like Bitcoin?

No. Ethereum does not set a maximum coin count like Bitcoin's 21 million. However, since the EIP-1559 upgrade part of the fees is "burned" (destroyed), which can reduce net supply when the network is heavily used. That is why its issuance is sometimes described as potentially deflationary, though it is not guaranteed.

How long does an Ethereum transaction take?

Ethereum produces a block every ~12 seconds, and a transaction with a sufficient fee usually confirms within that timeframe. Full finality (when the transaction is considered irreversible under proof of stake) arrives roughly a couple of epochs later. If you pay too little gas during congestion, your transaction can be left waiting.
