Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum designed to represent bitcoin within that ecosystem, with the promise of a 1:1 peg: for every WBTC minted there must be a real bitcoin held in custody. Its aim is to let BTC's value be used in Ethereum DeFi apps, something Bitcoin's own network does not offer natively.
Custody, mint and burn with proof of reserves
The WBTC model relies on custodians that hold the real bitcoin and "merchants" that manage the minting and burning of tokens: when a BTC enters custody a WBTC is minted, and when a WBTC is redeemed it is burned and the BTC is released. There are public, on-chain-verifiable proof-of-reserves to check that backing.
Custody and smart-contract risk
Unlike holding bitcoin directly, with WBTC you depend on the custodian keeping the backing BTC and on the smart contract being secure: if the custodian fails or the backing breaks, the token could lose its peg to BTC. The 2024 change in the custodian's management sparked industry debate about that dependence, a specific risk that does not exist when holding native bitcoin.
