Risk Warning for Bitcoin/Cryptocurrencies
Trading in commodities and currencies involves a significant amount of risk. Prices can fluctuate on any given day. Due to such price fluctuations, you may gain or lose value of your assets at any given time. Any currency may be subject to large swings in value and may even become completely worthless. There is always the inherent risk of losses as a result of buying, selling, or trading anything on the market.
Bitcoin trading has specific risks, which are not shared with other currencies, official commodities, or goods in a market.
Unlike most currencies, which are backed by government reserves or other legal entities, as well as commodities like silver and gold, Bitcoin is a "flat" currency, which is only backed by mathematics, technology, and trust. The currency is absolutely decentralized, meaning there is no authority that can take corrective action to protect the value of Bitcoin in a crisis or issue more currency.
Bitcoin is an autonomous, mostly unregulated worldwide payment system. When using Bitcoins, traders rely on the digital, decentralized, and mostly anonymous system, which is based on the p2p network and cryptography to maintain its integrity.
Bitcoin trading is susceptible to irrational or rational bubbles or complete loss of confidence, which could collapse demand/supply. Any action, even remotely connected to Bitcoins, can collapse confidence in this currency, such as unexpected changes imposed by the currency developers, a government crackdown, the creation of a superior Bitcoin alternative in competition, or even a deflationary or inflationary spiral. Confidence can also collapse due to various technical issues: if the anonymity of the system can be compromised, funds are lost or stolen, or in the case that hackers or governments are able to prevent Bitcoin transactions from being established.
There may be additional risks that have not been foreseen or identified in the present Terms of Use .
Each user must carefully assess whether their financial situation and tolerance for risk are suitable for buying/selling/trading Bitcoins.
